Everybody needs the advice of lawyers at some time during their lives. Often the first contact will be when buying a house, at which time one is considering a home loan and conveyancing, both of which require legal work.
You will always see the lawyers circling around personal tragedy. Debt and insolvency, personal injury and professional miscalculations (or alleged misconduct) exude an aroma that lawyers, usurers and bailiffs are trained to sniff out as flies are programmed for their particular ordure.
Around 40% of people need legal advice when getting a divorce. Modern convention seems to dictate that relationships as well as consumer goods are expendable. We throw away our relationships children and family when we get bored with them, and move on.
As the lawyer said: “There’s no money in a happy marriage”. Divorce is big business and contributes greatly to the GNP of most western countries. Lawyers then can be considered to be important producers of wealth for their countries.
So let’s hear a big HOORAH! for Messrs. Sue, Grabbit and Run.
Of course the Law is a great place for networking and career promotion. Many people take law with no real interest in the monkey-work of legal practice. It can be a great route to power and wealth through politics. As the great Gilbert and Sullivan put it: “I copied those writs with a hand so free that now I am the ruler of the Queen’s navy”.
So study the law for a career. There is no such thing as a hungry lawyer.
